The synagogue of Lailashi stands in a Lechkhumi village where a Jewish community lived from old times. Georgian Jews settled in mountain villages for centuries, and such synagogues were built in the middle of a quarter, among the dwelling houses rather than apart.
Lailashi lies nine kilometres from Tsageri, in the Tskhenistskali valley. A hundred and fifty metres away stands a church called Gregorian, that is linked with the Armenian tradition: two houses of prayer of different faiths within one street is a rare thing for Lechkhumi. The church of Lajani stands two and a half kilometres off.
The building is seen from outside and one does not always get in. The rules of a visit are those of any house of prayer: modest dress, quiet, a covered head for men if entry does prove possible. Photography is better agreed upon.
