Armazi Monastery of the Mother of God stands on the right bank of the Armazistskali River, in Mtskheta Municipality, among the churches, cathedrals and monasteries of the region, about 5 km from Mtskheta. It's important not to confuse this monastery with the better-known ancient Armazi fortress (Armaztsikhe), capital of ancient Iberia, located separately.
The complex includes several structures: a 12th-century church at its centre, a bell tower, a gate and a crypt. Fragments of period frescoes survive inside. According to reviews, the monastery is currently undergoing partial restoration, which explains some access restrictions to certain parts of the complex.
The road deserves attention. At least two independent reviews note the access road is rough in places, and one visitor also mentions passing through security at the entrance, likely due to proximity to a restricted area. Worth factoring in when planning your visit and allowing extra time.
