The Marian church stands in Karsani village. The dedication to the Mother of God is named plainly here and carried into the name of the church itself.
Karsani runs right up to the town edge of Mtskheta yet remains a separate village with a district of its own. The second Karsani church, of St Nino, stands about a kilometre and three hundred metres away, the Olga convent closer, at eight hundred and forty metres, and beyond it begins the town with Svetitskhoveli and Jvari above the meeting of the rivers.
This is a village church, its gates opened by arrangement, and asking in the village is often quicker than waiting at the door. The rules are the usual ones: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet. It is better to leave the car by the road, as the village streets are narrow.
