Church of St. Mary in the village of Akaurta, Kvemo Kartli, Georgia
- Description
In the depths of Kvemo Kartli, among ancient villages and mysterious rivers, stands the Church of Our Lady of Akaurta, evidence of the greatness and spirituality of Georgia. This architectural ensemble, dating back to the 5th-6th centuries, is exquisitely integrated into the picturesque landscape, located on the banks of the Mashavera River at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level.
The church, built from massive hewn stone blocks, like a wise keeper of history, tells us about its past. On the eastern side there is a protrusion of the apse, which gives the building a unique appearance, and the columns dividing the church building are evidence of the architectural sophistication of the ancient masters. Reliefs with plant motifs decorating the northern facade call for admiration and give peace.
With every stone, with every ornament, the Church of Our Lady of Akaurta comes to life, reminding us of how important it is to preserve historical heritage. Restored thanks to the efforts of the Ministry of Culture, Monument Protection and the Ministry of Sports of Georgia in 2007-2008, it shines with new colors, inviting everyone who seeks to immerse themselves in the richness of the culture and spirituality of Georgia to take a trip to its sacred spaces.
