The church of the Mother of God stands in Kvemo Akhalsheni, north-west of Bolnisi. The building is a plain village one and its parish is small.
The name is easy to get wrong here: Akhalsheni means new settlement in Georgian, and dozens of villages across the country carry it. The nearest village of the same name lies near Tsalka, some fifty kilometres away, and it holds six shrines of its own.
