The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and the dedication is confirmed by every version of the name at once, which is rare in this part of the region: toponyms without a saint are far more common here.
Two villages of the same name should be told apart here: Kokhta exists in Kakheti, near Telavi, where a Virgin Mary church stands, and here, on the Tsalka plateau of Kvemo Kartli. These are different places at opposite ends of the country, more than two hundred kilometres apart, so navigate by the coordinates.
There is no fixed schedule of services and the site can be approached at any time. The village lies only five kilometres west of Tsalka, so the detour is short. The plateau is open, windy and snowy in winter: in the cold season check in advance whether the road has been cleared.
