The church is dedicated to Saint Mary, the Mother of God. In Georgia her feast is called Mariamoba and is kept at the end of August: it is one of the days when village churches are opened and the whole village gathers in them.
Gumbati stands on the Tsalka upland, north west of Tsalka, and the village itself holds no other shrines. Two kilometres away, however, begins Avranlo, the village richest in prayer places in this area, where a dozen and a half of them stand.
Gumbati fits well at the start or the end of a route round Avranlo, as the drive between them is short. In the church keep to the usual rules: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and a headscarf for women.
