The name of the site sounds unusual for Georgian churches: Aia-Savva. Its first part resembles the Greek word for a saint, which fits the history of the neighbourhood: the Tsalka plateau has long been linked with a Greek community whose villages and place names survive here to this day.
The type of the site is defined differently: it is called both a church and a chapel, and both versions have their place. Two hundred metres away stands another church of the village, known both as a church of the Transfiguration and as a chapel of Saint Dimitri.
There is no fixed schedule of services and the site can be approached at any time. Both churches of Avranlo can be walked in ten minutes. The plateau is open and windy, colder in winter than the valleys, so bring warmer clothes than a Tbilisi forecast would suggest.
