A church of Saint George in Akhalsheni. George is the most venerated saint in Georgia, and in villages holding several shrines a church of his name is usually one of the chief ones.
Akhalsheni is unusually rich in shrines: six churches and prayer places fit within three hundred metres of one another. This church stands in the middle of the group, with the prayer places of Saint Charalampos and Saint Panteleimon closest to it.
The whole group is walked in about thirty minutes, and this is a convenient place to start. The rules are the same everywhere: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and a headscarf is useful for women.
