A church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the chief one in the Akhalsheni group. In Georgian the Dormition is called Mariamoba and is kept at the end of August: it is one of the principal Marian feasts of the year, and on such days village churches gather the whole neighbourhood.
Akhalsheni yields a whole scattering of shrines: six churches and prayer places within three hundred metres of one another. Besides this church there are Saint George, Saint Panteleimon, Saint Sophia, Saint Charalampos and Saint Sabas.
The whole group can be walked in half an hour, and that is the best way to see it as a whole. The rules are the same everywhere: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and a headscarf is useful for women.
