The church is dedicated to the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, soldiers who by church tradition met their death on the ice of a lake after refusing to renounce their faith. The dedication is common in Georgia, and such churches were usually built in mountain villages.
Bareti stands north-east of Tsalka and leads the local villages in the number of its shrines: churches of Peter and Paul and of the Holy Cross, the hall church of the Dormition of a neighbouring abandoned village, chapels of St Barbara and St Demetre, and an Ascension church site. The chapel of St Sabbas by an ancient settlement lies a kilometre and a half away.
The church holds no regular services, and visits are arranged with the locals. The village is alive, and on major feast days it can be busy here.
