The church of St Seraphim is built of wood. That is a rarity in Georgia: here churches are almost always of stone, and a wooden one stands out at once among its neighbours.
Akhkerpi lies in the far south of Bolnisi Municipality, by the Armenian border. The village is known for its old shrines: the ruins of the church of the vanished village of Akopasopeli, the Mother of God church in Verkhviani and the St George church in Mgliskri, while the Khorakert monastic complex stands two and a half kilometres away.
This is border country, and a trip is best planned in advance with the rules of the zone in mind. There are no regular services, and visits are arranged on the spot.
