A church of the Mother of God known by the name Verkhviani. The word itself is akin to the Georgian name for a poplar, and such place names usually point to a notable tree or grove by which the place was remembered.
It stands in the far south of the region, in the Akhkerpi area, not far from the state border. The nearest neighbouring shrine, the church of Saint George near Akhkerpi, lies about three and a half kilometres away.
The area is close to the border, and the state of the access roads and the order of travel are best found out in advance. In the church itself the usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and a headscarf for women.
