The church of the Virgin stands in Gavazi, a village on the Oktomberi to Chikaani to Gavazi road in the northern part of the Alazani valley. The village also holds another church building, the Karajaanta sakvdari in its southern part.
A curious feature of the area is linked to the name Gavazi: three churches of the neighbouring villages of Akhalsopeli and Saruso carry the qualifier of Gavazi in their names although they stand outside Gavazi itself, a dozen kilometres away. Such names usually preserve the memory of an old parish affiliation, when the boundaries of the district ran differently.
A village church may keep no fixed schedule; service times are learned on site. Dress with shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, and speak quietly on the grounds.
