The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and stands right by the road, at the entrance to Gavazi, rather than deep among the residential streets. It is therefore easy to find: it is visible from the road linking Oktomberi, Chikaani and Gavazi.
Gavazi lies in the Kvareli part of Kakheti, west of the town, among the vineyards that yield the wine of this neighbourhood. The setting is flat, and other Kvareli sanctuaries are not far: the Trinity church west of the town, the Kindzmarauli monastery and the churches of Kuchatani.
There is no fixed schedule of services, but the village is lively and it is usually possible to step inside. The rules are those of any working church: covered shoulders and knees, quiet. Its roadside position makes the church a convenient stop on a wine route around the Kvareli neighbourhood.
