The church is dedicated to Saint Nino, the enlightener of Georgia, and by building type it is a darbazuli, that is a hall church: a single space without division into naves, the commonest type of Georgian village church. That definition stands in the name itself, which is rare for rural churches.
Kalauri lies on the plain north of Gurjaani, among vineyards. This is the liveliest of the three Kalauri churches: it stands in the eastern part of the village, closer to the residential streets, while the Archangels church and the Samqinauri church stay further west, by the village church road.
The parish is active and getting inside is usually possible. The rules are standard: covered shoulders and knees, quiet, and no photography during a service. The three Kalauri churches lie within a couple of kilometres, and walking between them is easy, the roads are level.
