The caveat has to come in the very first line: this is not that Gelati. The famous monastery founded by David the Builder and inscribed on the World Heritage list is in Imereti near Kutaisi, some three hundred and fifty kilometres to the west.
This is a village of the same name in eastern Kakheti, north of Lagodekhi, and only ruins remain of its church. There is no working church here and no services are held. The century of building is not established. The Imeretian Gelati holy places also appear in this list, and should not be confused with this one.
Treat the ruins with care: do not climb on the masonry, take nothing away and move nothing. The site is open and can be approached at any time.
