The church of St. George and the Martyr church in Chumlaki stand thirty metres apart and in reality read as a single ensemble.
Such pairs are not rare in Georgian villages: small churches were placed beside one another rather than instead of one another, and over time they grew into a shared yard. Chumlaki holds seven church buildings, and this pair is their northernmost group. The rest are scattered across the village over about two and a half kilometres.
You can walk up to both churches at any time of day. Giorgoba, the day of St. George, is kept twice a year, and on those days village churches like this become genuinely crowded. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
