A church of the Most Holy Mother of God, also referred to as a church of Mother Mary. The qualifier darbazuli is not a name but an architectural type: it is the Georgian word for a hall church, a rectangular space under a single roof with no piers dividing it into aisles. The type is ancient and extremely widespread in rural Georgia.
The church stands between Ruispiri and Karajala, north-west of Telavi: its name is tied to the first village while it lies closer to the second. Around it are the vineyards of the Alazani valley and three more holy places of the area: the church of Saint Nicholas, Mamadaviti and the church of Saint Tevdore. The age of the building is not established, and the type alone cannot date it.
