Kviratskhoveli is the Georgian name of the feast of the Resurrection, and churches with such a dedication are found all over Kakheti. This one stands in Kvemo Alvani, by the road rather than deep among the residential streets, so it is easy to find.

Kvemo Alvani and neighbouring Zemo Alvani are Tush villages on the plain: for centuries the Tush came down here from the mountains for the winter and returned to Tusheti in summer. From here begins the road to Abano, one of the highest driveable passes in the Caucasus, leading to Omalo. In Zemo Alvani, further up the road, stands a Trinity church.

The church is active and it is usually possible to step inside. Dress as for any church, and keep quiet in the yard. If you are heading to Tusheti this makes a convenient last stop before the climb: there are almost no villages further along the route, and the pass is open only in the warm season.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip

  • A working church of the Resurrection, Kviratskhoveli in the Georgian tradition
  • Kvemo Alvani, a Tush village at the start of the road to the Abano pass
  • Neighbouring Zemo Alvani holds a Trinity church
