The Virgin Mary church stands in Babaneuri, about three hundred metres from the village church of Saint George. Two churches with different dedications at such a distance usually mean separate parish quarters.
Babaneuri gave its name to one of the two sections of the Akhmeta reserve: groves of zelkova, a rare tree of the elm family, are protected here. The second section, Batsara, is known for its yew forests. The village stands between the Alazani plain and the wooded slopes along which the boundary of the protected area runs.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a working place of prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Come in the morning while the light is soft.
- Check the forecast, as rain makes the approach slippery.
- There is no need to touch candles or icons.
Getting there
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
- Plan the visit together with nearby stops, as there is no dedicated transport here.
