The church of John the Evangelist in Kistauri is the main church of a village on the road from Akhmeta to Telavi. A tower rises beside the church, and the ensemble is named just so: the church and the tower, a pairing in which all Kakhetian history reads, with its prayer and its defence under one roof of sky.
The tower clearly does its work: a pair like this is hard to drive past. Kistauri is generous with churches: the St. Nino church works in the residential part, Kvelatsminda stands by the western edge, and all three churches fold into one village route an hour long at an unhurried pace.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service. The tower is not climbed: it harms the old masonry.
