The church of the Bakhtrioni fortress is a church within the walls of the stronghold on a hill above the Alazani. It is the upper church of the Bakhtrioni ensemble, and prayer here goes on literally in the scenery of history: the very walls tied to the uprising of sixteen fifty-nine.
The climb to the fortress is short and the reward double: a church within the walls and a panorama of the Alazani valley out to the Caucasus ridges. Slightly below, at the foot, works the Bakhtrioni parish church: the two churches are best seen in one visit, with Muni and Khorbalo waiting nearby as well.
The church is seen freely, with ordinary courtesy: a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way. The fortress walls need care: no climbing on the masonry and no shifting of stones.
