The family church of the Andronikashvili. The word ghvtaeba means the Divinity and points to a dedication to the Saviour, while the form andronikashvilt is an old genitive construction, literally of the Andronikashvili. They are among the well known princely families of Kakheti, whose names appear in the history of the province from the late Middle Ages onward.
The combination is characteristic of the Kakhetian nobility: a family raised its own church on its own lands, and such a church lived a household life as much as a parish one. Ozhio lies west of Telavi, and another church of the village, dedicated to the Apostle Thomas, stands about a kilometre and a half away. When this church was built is not established, so we will not tie it to any particular generation of the family.
The site is a family one and calls for more restraint than an ordinary parish: quieter, and moving nothing. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf.
