A male monastic house dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Unlike parishes, houses keep their own order of the day: it is marked out by services and work, and is not arranged around visitors.
The village carries the name of the main river of western Georgia, and that is no coincidence: Rioni lies on its bank north of Kutaisi, beside the Gumati hydro scheme. The road here runs along the river past the dam and continues towards Zarati. The century of foundation is not established.
Covering clothing, a headscarf and skirt for women, voices kept low. The first half of the day is the better time to come. Photographing the monastics without permission is not done.
