The church of the Transfiguration stands in Rioni, north of Kutaisi. The parish here is a living one, and the village knows it as its another shrine.
The first, the monastery of St Nicholas, stands by the Gumati road. Two kilometres from here, between the villages, is the Archangel church, to which no village is attached at all. The three churches of the valley are well seen on a single trip.
There are no regular services, and visits are arranged with local people. The usual etiquette applies: covered shoulders and knees, quiet inside.
