A chapel dedicated to the Saviour. Matskhovari is Georgian for the Saviour, and the second name, Zeda Matskhovari, means the Upper Saviour: the building stands above the main built-up part of the village. A chapel it is, not a parish church: it is small, and services here happen by occasion rather than by the church year.
Speti lies in eastern Imereti, and the climb to the chapel runs up the slope from the village. Lower down, closer to the houses, stands a another building of the Saviour, the Lower Saviour, and such a paired arrangement is common in mountain villages: one church serves everyday community life while the other stands high up and is visited on occasion. The century of building is not established.
The place is visited and well tended, and can be approached on any day. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf; leave candles and offerings alone and move nothing.
