What snakes and wild animals live in Georgia?

Bears, turs, wolves and the venomous snakes worth knowing about.

Answered at: Checked at:

Short answer

Georgia is home to brown bears, wolves, jackals, foxes, wild boar, roe deer, red deer, chamois and Caucasian turs, and very rarely the Caucasian leopard. The venomous snakes to watch for are mainly vipers, including the Caucasian viper in the west and the Levant viper in the dry east. Most snakes in Georgia are not venomous and avoid people.

Why

  1. Large animals are easiest to see in national parks such as Lagodekhi, Borjomi-Kharagauli and Tusheti.
  2. The Levant viper lives in dry areas of the east, such as Vashlovani National Park.
  3. Rare species are protected by the Agency of Protected Areas of Georgia.

Details

On hikes, stay on trails, watch your step on rocks and don't touch snakes. If bitten, call 112 and get to a doctor straight away. In mountain forests, store food so bears can't smell it.
