Why are there palm trees in Batumi, and what is the coast's nature like?
Subtropics, the botanical garden and the fish off Batumi.
Short answer
Palm trees grow in Batumi thanks to its humid subtropical climate and mild winters, and most were planted from the late 19th century, when the seaside boulevard and gardens were laid out. Many exotic plants on the coast spread from the collections of the Batumi Botanical Garden. Eucalyptus, bamboo, magnolias, citrus and tea grow around the city.
Why
- The Batumi Botanical Garden at Green Cape was founded in 1912 by the botanist Andrey Krasnov.
- Frost is rare in Batumi, so warmth-loving plants survive the winter.
- Anchovy, horse mackerel, red mullet and turbot are caught in the Black Sea off Batumi.
Details
The richest collection of subtropical plants is at the Botanical Garden on Green Cape, 9 kilometres from the centre. Fresh Black Sea fish is sold at Batumi's fish market and cooked on the spot in its cafes.
