Lake Tabatskuri: how to get there and what to see?
A high mountain lake on the Javakheti plateau.
Short answer
Tabatskuri is a high mountain lake at about 2,000 metres in southern Georgia's Samtskhe-Javakheti, south of Bakuriani. People come for the quiet, mountain views, fishing and camping, and a village of the same name sits on its shore. It's best reached in summer by 4x4 via Bakuriani, as public transport barely goes there.
Why
- The Ktsia-Tabatskuri protected area surrounds the lake.
- Even in summer nights by the lake are cold, so bring warm clothes.
- In winter the road is snowbound and hard to pass.
Details
Combine the trip with a stay in Bakuriani or Borjomi. Ask local drivers about road conditions before you set off.
Tip
Bring food and water, as there are hardly any shops by the lake.
What may differ
Mountain weather changes quickly, and some roads and trails are open only in summer.
