Resorts: skiing and mineral springs

Gudauri, Bakuriani and Goderdzi: when the season runs and what ski passes and rentals cost. Borjomi and Tskaltubo: what the springs treat, where to stay and how to spot fake Borjomi.

Borjomi water comes from springs in the Borjomi Gorge in southern Georgia and is bottled at the plant in Borjomi itself.

Bakhmaro is a mountain resort in Georgia, in the Guria region in the west, at about 2,000 metres among conifer forests.

  • Nabeghlavi or Borjomi: which is better?

Both are natural sodium bicarbonate waters, but Borjomi from the Borjomi gorge is noticeably saltier and more mineralised, while Nabeghlavi from Guria tastes milder, so people drink it more often day to day.

Ureki's black sand contains magnetite, and local tradition uses it to warm joints and for musculoskeletal complaints, and in the past for children's health.

Tskaltubo is a spa town with radon mineral waters about 10 kilometres from Kutaisi.

  • What resorts are there in Georgia?

Georgia has three kinds of resorts: Black Sea beach resorts (Batumi, Kobuleti, Ureki, Shekvetili, Gonio), ski resorts (Gudauri, Bakuriani, Goderdzi and the Mestia resorts in Svaneti) and spa resorts with mineral waters (Borjomi, Tskaltubo, Sairme).

  • Where is Gudauri, and when is the season?

Gudauri is a ski resort in Georgia's Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, on the Georgian Military Road about 120 kilometres north of Tbilisi.

  • What is there to see and do in Borjomi?

In Borjomi, walk through Central Park to the mineral spring and on to the open-air sulfur pools, take the cable car up to the plateau for views over the town, and hike the trails of Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park.

  • Where is Borjomi, and what country is it in?

Borjomi is a resort town in Georgia's Samtskhe-Javakheti region, in the Kura river gorge about 160 kilometres west of Tbilisi.
