Alkhalaki Complex: Assumption Church and a 16th-Century Fortress

Georgia's attractions are diverse: picturesque landscapes, ancient architecture, and centuries-old traditions etched on the walls of stone buildings. A fine example of this country's landmarks is the Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary complex.

Architecture

Located in the eastern part of Shida Kartli, it occupies a central location in the village of Akhalkalaki. The architectural complex consists of a main hall church, a fortress, several observation towers, and a bell tower, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.

The church, constructed of stone and brick, has a rectangular shape, complemented by a semicircular apse on the east. The apses are surrounded by arches and decorated with carved windows. Sunlight streams into the church hall from windows on the southern, northern, and central facades of the building. An arched gazebo adjoins the southern facade, where the entrance to the church is also located.

A two-story stone bell tower, decorated with brickwork, rises in the northwest. The roof is shaped like a pyramid, its peak reaching toward the sky. The western façade features a leaf-shaped ornament. Here, too, the lightness and loftiness imparted by the building's arched facades are evident. The ground floor houses a chapel. The bell tower, harmonious with the overall ensemble, stands nearby and connects to the main hall of the church through a door on the north side. Arches frame the church, as if supporting it, and the columns of the arches end in pilasters.

Previously, the church was surrounded by a fence resembling a stone fortress, consisting of several watchtowers. Next to the church stood a fortress that protected the clergy and parishioners. Only a few towers remain today, the best of which is the four-story tower in the northwest. The ground floor houses a grain warehouse, and climbing higher offers a view of the fortifications. The tower is built of stone and shaped like a cylinder, the top of which is decorated with battlements.

The small village of Akhalkalaki is a distillation of traditional Georgia, with its stunning landscapes, stone buildings, and friendly people.
