Ateni Sioni Near Gori: Ancient 7th-Century Church
In the Shida Kartli region, Gori Municipality, not far from the village of Ateni, in the valley of the same name, lies the Ateni Sioni. It is located on the edge of a steep hill. The building dates back to the early 7th century.
It is a cross-in-square, four-apse cathedral. Its walls are constructed of hewn greenish-gray sandstone blocks; stones of other colors were also used in the construction.
The square under the dome is the compositional core of the church. The spherical octagonal dome, with a four-windowed throat, rests on a projecting apse. The dome itself is quite wide and low, with a very massive neck. The open, four-sided domed space with apses forms a cross. Each corner of the cross contains a room connected to the central space of the church. The altar rises two steps.

The priest's residence and its corresponding apse are located in front of the altar's western apse. This makes the east-west axis longer than the south-north axis. The church is entered from the south and north. The southeast and southwest corners of the roof are decorated with images of sheep's heads, while the northeast corner is adorned with the dome of a smaller version of the church.
A distinctive feature of the eastern and southern facades is their abundance of decoration. The church's windows are decorated with projecting architraves. The main entrance to the church is from the south. The vestibule is decorated with double spherical capitals, bases, and decorative half-columns.
Remnants of ancient decoration were discovered under crumbling plaster in the interior of the Church of Zion. Red paint imitated architectural folding. The cross adorning the dome is also outlined in this color. Even more recent decoration is also found in the church's interior. On the apse ledge and above the door leading to the sacrificial chamber, crosses painted with white and red paint on the gray plaster wall were found. These crosses served a protective function.

The church was painted in the second half of the 11th century. Comparing the style and technical means, one can conclude that the work was carried out by several professionals. Despite this, the iconographic and artistic meaning of the paintings are unified. The paintings utilized a variety of shades and colors.
