St. Theodore Church in Alkhalki: a 19th-Century Stone Temple

In the central Georgian region of Shida Kartli, home to some of Georgia's most beautiful places, lies a magnificent monument of medieval architecture: the Church of St. Theodore in Akhalkalaki. It can be found in the heart of the village of Akhalkalaki (Kaspi Municipality).

The building dates back to the 19th century, and local rock was used for its construction, in the form of cut stone and massive boulders. The church is supported by a single arch, rising to a cupola-shaped vault.

Georgia's landmarks, particularly its architectural ones, are renowned for their decorative elements.

The church is a hall-like structure covered in tiles. The walls extend into semicircular apses with a sloping roof. The church is entered through western and northern entrances; the vestibule is decorated with arches with pilasters and an ornamented capital.

Light enters through carved arched windows on the south and north sides. The interior is divided by an altar, flanked by an ancient iconostasis.

An arched pavilion is attached to the western side of the church, through which one can enter the church hall. A bell tower rises in the center, its support also an arched structure supported by round columns. The bell tower's roof is shaped like a pyramid, decorated with tiles, and its peak reaches toward the sky.

Visiting this monument, anyone will find something to see in Georgia. It showcases the entirety of this sunny country's medieval national architecture: murals, ornaments, and stone arched architecture.
