๐ฃ The Artificial Lake in Akhaltsikhe: Boat Hire, the Waterfront and the Sports Complex
What to expect
Not a natural attraction and not a swimming spot, but a municipal recreation area. Knowing that saves the disappointment.
It is not worth a trip from another town. But fitting it into a day in Akhaltsikhe, after a fortress that is all climbs and stone, makes perfect sense.

The lake in Akhaltsikhe is a municipal recreation area rather than a natural feature. The town hall officially calls it an artificial lake, and that explains at once what strikes you first: the almost rectangular shape and the straight banks.
For the town it means more than a visitor might assume. Akhaltsikhe sits in a valley ringed by mountains, the sea is far away, and the large lakes of Javakheti are the better part of a hundred kilometres off. A man-made lake within the town is the only large body of water you can walk to.
๐ฃ What has appeared on the shore

The town hall has landscaped the area around the lake, and the result is a coherent set of facilities.
On the water you can now go out: boats and pedal boats are for hire. For a town this size that was an event, and the town hall announced the launch separately.
On the bank a strip of planting was laid out and new benches installed. This is a proper promenade rather than an empty perimeter.
Open-access gym equipment stands right on the waterfront and is free to use.
Bicycles are available too, so the circuit round the lake need not be done on foot.
The town hall describes the lake as one of the favourite spots of both residents and visitors, and the mix of facilities shows who it is aimed at: locals who come here in the evening rather than tourists with a single day in town.
๐ A sports complex with two pools
A separate and recent development worth knowing about in advance.
In September 2025 a new multifunctional sports complex was presented in Akhaltsikhe. Construction cost more than 25 million lari, which makes it a substantial facility for a district centre.
Inside are two swimming pools: a large one of 33 by 25 metres and a small one of 16 by 7.
At the time of the announcement the complex was being handed over to Akhaltsikhe town hall. Once that was complete, staff were to be recruited and the facility brought fully into use.
Two honest caveats. The official announcement does not tie the complex specifically to the lakeshore; it says only 'in Akhaltsikhe'. And the report is a year old, so the opening hours of the pools are best checked locally.

Who will find something to do here
The lake works differently depending on who you come with and why.
What there is not: a beach or designated swimming areas. The lake is built for walking and activity on the bank rather than for swimming.
๐ Fitting it into a day in Akhaltsikhe
The logic is simple, and it is about tiredness.
Seeing Akhaltsikhe means first of all Rabati fortress: ten hectares, the climb to the citadel, stone staircases, little shade. Two or three hours there leave everyone's legs aching.
The lake works as the counterweight. Level banks, benches, water, no climbs at all. It makes an ideal second half of the day, once you have had enough of the historical part.
The order runs like this. The fortress in the morning, before the heat and the coach groups. Lunch in the centre. The lake towards evening, ideally near sunset.
With children you can reverse it: boats first, then the fortress while everyone still has the energy for the climbs.
A fuller account of the town is in the piece on the sights of Akhaltsikhe, and the fortress has one of its own, on Rabati.

๐ Getting there
The lake is inside Akhaltsikhe, so no special trip is needed: you will be in town anyway if you came for Rabati.
From Tbilisi, about three hours by marshrutka from Didube station, through Gori, Khashuri and Borjomi.
From Borjomi, roughly an hour along the Mtkvari gorge.
From Vardzia, about an hour too: Akhaltsikhe is the usual base for that trip.
Within the town everything is walkable. Exact coordinates and visitor reviews are on the Akhaltsikhe Lake page.
For the exact position of the lake see the site page: it is more precise than a search on the town name.
๐๏ธ When to come
In summer, the evening is best: the days are hot in Akhaltsikhe and there is not much shade on the bank yet, as the trees are young.
In spring and autumn any time of day works, and these are the best seasons for the walk round.
In winter Akhaltsikhe sits at around a thousand metres and snow is common. Boat hire almost certainly does not operate then, though a walk along a snowy bank looks quite different from the summer version.
On hire, check locally: the season and opening hours are not published anywhere official.

๐งญ What is nearby
Rabati Fortress, the town's main site and one of the most visited in Georgia.
Sapara Monastery, twelve kilometres away, an active house on a gorge slope.
The cave monastery of Vardzia, an hour to the south.
The town park opposite the drama theatre, if you want greenery without the walk to the lake.
๐ฃ๏ธ Over to you
Been to the lake in Akhaltsikhe? Tell us whether boat hire was running when you visited, what state the bank was in, and whether the pools at the sports complex have opened. Leave a review on Madloba: there is almost no official information about this place, and visitors' observations are worth more than any source.
Information is current as of August 2026. Boat hire, the state of the facilities and the status of the sports complex all change, so check locally.
