Vakhtang Gorgasali is one of the key figures of Georgian history: a fifth-century king of Kartli, the founder of Tbilisi and a saint of the Georgian Church. Churches of his name are few in the country, and every such address stands out.
The dedication ties a village church directly to the wider national story, and dedications to kings are generally rare in Georgia. Chorchana is a small village in Kareli Municipality, at the northern edge of the Kartli plain, closer to the mountains. The road here runs from Kareli into the foothills.
Arriving, you come not so much to an architectural monument as to a place of living historical memory. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf.
