The Marian church stands about seven hundred metres north of the church of St. George in the same village. For Patara Garejvari, a very small settlement, having two churches indicates that the village was once noticeably more populous than it is now.
The situation is typical of this part of Shida Kartli and repeats from village to village: there are more churches than the present number of residents requires. That is exactly why the church map of the Gori and Kareli districts is more interesting than any guidebook: it shows the demography of the past rather than the present.
No dating has become attached to the building. The approach runs along a dirt road that turns to mud after rain. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf. Karaleti with half a dozen church buildings is right next door.
