📍 Coords and Plus Code

The chapel carries the name Surb Khach, which in Armenian means Holy Cross. The name recalls the Armenian layer in the history of Samtskhe-Javakheti, although which community the building belongs to today cannot be stated reliably.

It stands by the road on the approach to Abatkhevi and is visible from the verge. Roadside chapels like this are placed in Georgia at forks, springs and village entrances: people approach them casually, without a timetable and without a service.

There is room inside for only a few people, and it is customary to enter quietly. Dress soberly. A full Armenian church of the same dedication stands nearby in Didi Pamaji, and the two buildings show the difference in scale well.

📍 In brief

  • A roadside chapel whose name translates as Holy Cross
  • The approach to Abatkhevi village, Akhaltsikhe Municipality
  • A full church of the same name stands in Didi Pamaji
