The church of St. George in Ptena is a village church north-west of Akhalkalaki, away from the big roads of the Javakheti plateau. Around are fields, yards and the wide horizons of the highland: a landscape in which a solitary church reads from afar.
Ptena is a place for those exploring the plateau without haste: the turn at Murjikani, a few kilometres of village road and a complete absence of fellow travellers. A good pair to the roadside church of St. Nino, past which one turns off to get here.
One enters freely, with ordinary rural courtesy: a quiet voice, modest dress, respect for the yards and pastures. In winter the plateau roads drift over: the best time to visit runs from late spring to autumn, when the plateau is green and the roads dry.
