The church in Shoka is a modest church of a small village on the slopes of Adigeni Municipality. As is the custom in the mountain valleys of Samtskhe, it is the church that marks the spiritual centre of a village, however small: without a church a village in these parts was not held complete.
There are no tours and no crowds here: only stone walls, village yards around and the silence of the slopes. That untouched rural authenticity which is ever harder to find by the big roads, and for which the turn off the valleyโs main road is worth making. The climb is short, and the silence is such that one hears oneโs own steps.
The place is seen freely, with simple courtesy kept: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for the residents and their yards. Such a visit takes a quarter of an hour and stays in memory longer than many a tour.
