The Holy Cross church belongs to the Armenian Apostolic tradition. A dedication to the Cross, Surb Khach in Armenian, is among the commonest for Armenian churches, and on the Javakheti plateau such churches stand in almost every large village.
Didi Arakali lies on a high treeless plateau seven kilometres from Ninotsminda. Several neighbours are close: the church of St. Stephen at Patara Arakali about eight hundred metres away, the church of Surb Nerses Mets at Satkhe two kilometres, the chapel of Orojolari four and a half.
Churches of the plateau are opened mostly for services and feasts, and on ordinary days the doors may be shut. The building can be seen from outside as well. Inside, dress modestly and keep quiet; in winter the plateau is cold and windy and the roads drift with snow.
