The church of St. Barbare at Cholashi is the family shrine of the Kochkiani. Family churches are no rarity in Svaneti: whole clans built and kept them, passing the care of the church from one generation to the next.
Barbare is the Georgian name of the great martyr Barbara, held in special honour in the mountain villages. Three neighbouring Cholashi churches stand within eight hundred metres, all three dedicated to St. George.
Family churches are sometimes closed, yet the shrine can be approached at any time. Behave quietly and respectfully; follow the coordinates.
