Of the church at Zogishi only ruins remain. No dedication has survived, and it cannot be recovered from the name of the place: in Lechkhumi such ruins are often known only by the name of the village.

Zogishi lies twelve kilometres from Tsageri, in the hills above the Tskhenistskali valley. Neighbours here are unexpectedly many: the salotsavi of Shkhudali and the ruins of Shkhudala stand about two kilometres away, the church of St. George of Tsagera village two, the church of Zeda Sairme a little over two, the church of Ghvardia four and a half.

What there is to see is the masonry and the plan rather than walls. Ruins ask for care: the stones are not moved, the foundation is not stepped on. Lechkhumi is damp and the grass around is wet for most of the year, so closed shoes are better. The district holds many churches and several are walked in one trip.

📌 In brief

  • The ruins of a church with no dedication kept
  • Zogishi in the hills above the Tskhenistskali valley
  • The Shkhudala churches stand about two kilometres away

For anyone interested in history and architecture, the ruins of this church are a must-see. Found in the Samegrelo province of western Georgia, it was constructed in the 10th century and played a vital role as a religious and cultural hub in the area.

Despite suffering damage over the years from invasions and natural events, the remaining ruins are still quite impressive and offer a glimpse into the rich history of Georgian church architecture. The intricate carvings and decorative features stand out, showcasing the region's artistic heritage.

Restoration efforts are underway, but even in its current state, the site is an intriguing spot for those who appreciate Georgian history and culture. I highly recommend visiting the ruins for anyone in the region. #hiddengem
