The church is dedicated to the Ascension of the Saviour, Amaghleba in Georgian. The feast falls on the fortieth day after Easter, and churches of this dedication in Racha usually stand on a rise: the name of the feast suggested the choice of site.
Zeda Ghvardia, that is upper Ghvardia, lies twelve kilometres from Khvanchkara, on the border of the Racha and Lechkhumi lands. The church of Tsakhi stands about two kilometres away, the church of St. George of Zeda Sairme three, the ruins of Zogishi four and a half.
The road here runs along the slopes and softens between seasons. The church is a village one, services are not held every day, yet it can always be approached and is visible from the road. Dress modestly, keep quiet inside; on the Ascension village churches can be crowded, at other times empty.
