The sakdari of St. George stands by the village of Tskhvarichamia. In Georgia a sakdari means a small church or a place of prayer: the word is used across the highlands and almost always describes a modest building raised by a single village.
The village lies in the hills between Mtskheta and Tbilisi, away from the main roads. The area around is thick with shrines: at Tedzami, about two kilometres off, stand the church of St. George and the place known here as Adgilis Deda, a little further the church of St. Nino, and to the north rises the monastery of Buriani. Mtskheta is about eighteen kilometres away.
The place is quiet and little visited, and no one opens it specially for arrivals. The usual rules of a Georgian church apply: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, voices kept low. The approach runs through village lanes, and the last stretch is best walked.
