The Buriani monastery is known by the name of the village: no dedication has stayed with the house, and it has no second name.
The monastery stands apart: the nearest shrines of the district, the revered places of the Shindiani khati and the Tsatskhviani khati at Zakaro, lie three and a half and almost four kilometres away, and the Paetoni khati at Galavani further still. Hills lie all around, and the villages here are few.
The rules are monastic: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women, quiet, photography by permission. The tracks between the villages are country ones, and getting here takes longer than the distance suggests, so set out with time to spare.
