A church dedicated to St. George stands in the village of Mamkoda. George is the commonest patron of Georgian village churches, and nearly every village around has one in his name. Such churches are usually small and stand in the village itself.
Mamkoda lies on the plain north of Tbilisi, between the city and the hills of Mtskheta. About a kilometre away survives a palace naeklesiari, the site where a church of a manor once stood. Further west begins Saguramo with its own church of St. George and the shrines of Shankevani. Mtskheta is about ten kilometres away, Tbilisi sixteen.
The village is close to the city and the road here is easy in any weather. The church is in use: shoulders and knees covered, a headscarf for women, no noise inside and no photography without asking.
