The church carries the name of St. George, patron of Georgia and the most frequent dedication of village churches in the country. His day, Giorgoba, is kept twice a year, and the November date is the more visible in villages.
Ratevani lies north-west of Bolnisi among dry hills. The white walls and a low bell tower are visible from the approach to the village. Ratevani has two shrines: besides this one, a church of the Mother of God stands higher up the street, so both can be walked in one short outing.
This is a parish church, opened for services. On ordinary days the village is quiet and getting inside does not always work out, though the yard stays accessible. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf, and voices are kept low in the yard.
