The church ruins lie about a kilometre and a half from Manglisi. There is no roof, the walls survive in part, and the building stands away from the settlement.
Manglisi is one of the oldest centres of Christianity in Georgia: the local Sioni is placed in the fourth century, a bishopric was here by the fifth, and the cathedral was thoroughly rebuilt in the year one thousand and two. The settlement lies on the slopes of the Trialeti range at about one thousand two hundred metres and has been known as a resort since the nineteenth century. Several church sites of different ages survive nearby.
Do not climb on the masonry, as the walls hold worse than they look. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Combine the visit with neighbouring villages to save time.
- Bring a torch if it is dark inside.
- Watch your step in tall grass.
Getting there
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
- The last stretch runs along a dirt road that softens after rain.
