A church of the Holy Trinity, a village parish. Trinity churches in Georgia were usually raised as the main church of a community: the feast is a moveable one, falling in midsummer, and in a village it coincides with the busiest season.
Kakliani lies in eastern Kvemo Kartli, in the hilly belt between Dmanisi and Tetritskaro. The name reads plainly: kakali is a walnut and the suffix turns the word into a walnut place, and walnut trees do shape the look of the yards here. Around it runs a chain of similar small villages with churches of their own, in Gantiadi, Javakhi and Tnusi. The date of building is not established and no builders are recorded.
The place lies away from tourist roads and those who come are mostly residents of the district. The roads are unpaved, so after rain a car with decent ground clearance is the safer choice. Inside the usual rules apply: covered shoulders and knees, a headscarf for women.
